How to Survive this Field?

2 May

A funny thing about the software field is that, things happen very fast that you cannot depend on only certain skillsets. In other words, it is better to be a generalist than a specialist. It is better to know several technologies and be okay in it rather than know one specific techology and be an expert in it. who knows, that one technology that you have been counting on, might become obsolete in the future and replaced by a simpler and much better method. As the saying goes “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. Now, what I am really trying to do, is to put my eggs in several baskets. Since last year, I have been playing and experimenting with emerging technologies and platforms. I am not an expert in these platforms. I am not even expected to be one. I’ve tried a bit of Ruby on Rails, a bit of Python, some PhP and MySql. I’ve even tried Android, which is a mobile platform introduced by Google to create mobile applications. At present, I am focusing on the dot net platform especially, VB.NET, ASP.NET and MS SQL. I am in the process of comparing which tool gives the best results in terms of quality of software produced, productivity, library functions, help references and adoption by the global community.
